ARGYLE — In a game three, winner-take-all scenario, Max Godfrey pitched a no-hitter in Argyle’s 11-0 win over Monticello-Albany in the WIAA Regional Quarterfinals on Thursday, May 25.
Godfrey’s first no-hitter was against Barneveld on Monday, April 24, where he struck out 20 of 21 batters. This time around, the junior struck out nine batters.
The game went just 4 1/2 innings, thanks to a pair of four-run innings for the Orioles. After striking out the side in the top of the first, Godfrey led off the bottom of the frame with a single to right. He stole second and came around to score on an error. Will Helfvogt walked, and Ike Waage drove both Thomas Nelson and Helfvogt home on a single to center.
A sacrifice bunt moved Waage into scoring position, but Waage stole third to be just 90 feet from home. Mason McNett drove him in with a single to right.
Argyle tacked on another run in the second via error.
With one out in the third, Deacon Kuebli walked to load the bases. Godfrey singled yet again, as the Orioles went station to station. Nelson drew a bases-loaded walk, and Helfvogt followed with a two-run double to left.
With a two-run bottom of the fourth, Argyle enforced the 10-run rule.
In addition to his no-hitter, Godfrey went 3-for-4 the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Helfvogt and Waage also drove in two runs, while McNett tallied two hits.
For Monticello-Albany, Dominic Schroeder led the offense with two walks and a stolen base. Cody Pryce suffered the loss giving up six earned runs on six hits. Aiden Brewer pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and gave up one earned run on two hits.
The Ponies ended their season with a 4-21 record, which was the most wins in program history. Brayden Bakken led the offense in most categories, including runs (18), hits (14), doubles (2), walks (16), stolen bases (12) and batting average (.230). Monticello-Albany turned to Pryce for the most innings on the mound (43), and the hurler did not disappoint, striking out a team best 55 batters. He and Bakken collected two wins each, while Bakken had the lowest ERA (5.11).
In other local playoff baseball, Black Hawk forfeited to Belmont due to team-wide illness.
