PORTAGE — Monroe swept Portage on Aug. 30, just days after finishing 1-4 at the two-day Mukwonago Invitational.
The 7-0 win over the Warriors opened the Badger West slate, and came despite not being fully healthy with the varsity lineup — a theme so far from this season.
“Krissi Haumer was unable to go in our singles lineup as she continues to battle and recover from multiple ankle injuries,” said Monroe coach Matt Bordner. “We bumped everyone up in our singles lineup, and I was pleased with how our team responded. We’ve talked quite a bit about the type of focus and energy it takes to compete right away after a long bus trip, and I couldn’t have been happier with the tone we set from the beginning.”
Lindsay Leuzinger rolled at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. Kate Kundert won a tiebreaker match at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
“Lindsay Leuzinger was great at No. 1 singles and has really settled into our singles lineup. She’s playing really great tennis and her confidence continues to grow,” Bordner said. “Kate found herself in a good battle at No. 2. Mentally, she went through some ups and downs and didn’t have great rhythm. We tried to reset going into her supertiebreaker and she responded pretty well. She was down 7-9 in the tiebreaker and faced several match points, but she was able to rattle off 4-straight points and walk away with a tight win.”
Taylor Jacobson came out victorious at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-2, and Elly Beckman won at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
“Taylor Jacobson continued to develop her singles game with a nice win at No. 3. Her ability to come up and finish points at the net continues to improve and I like her confidence as she continues to get more experience at No. 3 and No. 4 singles for us,” Bordner said.
Sydnee Conway and Allison Wunschel won the top flight doubles match 6-0, 6-1. Morgan Johnson and Grace Versnik won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, and Brooke Hanson and Sydney Wunschel won via forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
At the Mukwonago Invitational, Monroe defeated Madison La Follette 4-3, but lost to Menomonee Falls 6-1, Lake Mills 5-2, and 7-0 to Waukesha West and Mukwonago.
In the win over La Follette, Conway and Allison Wunschel won at No. 1 and 2 singles, with Leuzinger taking a 3-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles. Haumer and Johnson played together at No. 1 doubles and won a tight match as well.
“About 2 hours into this matchup, it really looked like we were going to lose this round 2-5. … (We) were able to do enough to grab a win,” Bordner said, praising his players for grinding out wins.
