Cheese lose two; Cards hold BF to single digits

MONROE — The Monroe girls basketball team lost back-to-back home games Feb. 3 and 5.

In the first game, against Oregon in a Badger Conference showdown, the Cheesemakers hung on for a while, but the Panthers erupted from the 3-point line to bury the home squad. Sam Schmitt was 5-for-11 from deep and led all scorers with 23 points. Emily Mortenson added 14 points, including two 3s. Oregon hit 9 of 31 3-point attempts and dominated the Cheesemakers on the glass, pulling in 45 rebounds. The Panthers also added 17 steals while turning the ball over themselves just 12 times.

Taylor Jacobson led Monroe with 14 points. Sloane Ambrose had 10. Monroe hit just two 3s as a team and were just 3-for-6 from the free throw line.

On Feb. 5, Monroe lost to Evansville 63-59.

The Cheesemakers (1-18) were set to host Mount Horeb Feb. 8, then travel to Edgewood Feb. 11 to close out the Badger West slate.

Brodhead 55, Big Foot 9

BRODHEAD — The seventh-ranked Cardinals held Rock Valley rival Big Foot to single digits on Feb. 3.

Abbie Dix scored 18 points to lead Brodhead, while teammate Kiarra Moe scored 16. Moe is just 18 points from the career 1,000-point milestone. 

Addie Yates added seven points, while Onnikah Oliver hit a pair of first half 3s for Brodhead.

Albany 66, Argyle 40

ALBANY — The Comets kept pace with Black Hawk in the quest for the Six Rivers East title thanks to a strong second half Feb. 3 against the Orioles.

Albany went into the half leading 35-28, but in the second half found a way to turn it on defensively, holding Argyle to just 12 points and running away with the 26-point win.

Senior Brianna Dahl led all scorers with 23 points for the Comets, while senior Kaiya Zurfluh added 15 and senior Payton Wachholz 11. Alana Durtschi added another eight points.

Dahl’s big night continued with nine rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. Wachholz had six boards, while Gracie Freitag added seven rebounds.

Alyssa Stadola led Argyle with 16 points, including a 5-for-13 mark from beyond the arc. Grace Ganshert tallied eight points and six rebounds. Jenna Allison had seven points, and Maggie Godrey added six points, four blocks and eight boards.


Albany 87, Abundant Life/St. Ambrose 14

ALBANY — Ten of 11 Comets scored in a nonconference route of Madison Abundant Life/St. Ambrose Feb. 5.

Dahl led all scorers with 15 points, while Wachholz and Zurfluh each had 14. Durtschi and Freitag each added nine points, and Emileigh Dallman chipped in with another eight.

Albany scored 31 baskets from 2-point range and five from beyond the arc. MALSA had just four baskets — three 3s and a single two-point bucket, plus three free throws.


Black Hawk 58, Juda 13

JUDA — The Warriors stayed on top in the Six Rivers East with a dominating victory over the Panthers Feb. 3.

Black Hawk outscored their hosts by three touchdowns in the first half, 28-7, then put up another 30 points in the second half.

Tara Wellnitz led Black Hawk with 15 points, eight steals and five rebounds. Raylin Peterson added 12 points, Tatum Baumgartner tallied 10 points, five assists and five steals, and Maddy Lange totaled eight points and six steals. Jaliyah Collins grabbed 10 boards for the Warriors as well.


New Glarus 66, Waterloo 28

WATERLOO — The Glarner Knights picked up a monster road win Feb. 3, dominating the Pirates from start to finish.

Lindsey Schadewalt typed a cheat code before tipoff and finished the night with 35 points, including a 6-for-8 mark from downtown. Schadewalt is ranked among the Top 10 in the state in Division 4 in 3-point shooting, hitting more than 40% of her shots from deep.

Alex Atwell scored nine points for New Glarus, and Grace Nommensen added eight more.

The Knights led 37-18 at halftime, and outscored the Pirates 29-10 in the second half.


Pec, Barneveld split

Pecatonica and Barneveld played each other in back-to-back games Feb. 3 and 5, splitting the pair of games. The away team won boys games. Barneveld won the first game 45-42, while Pecatonica took the second 42-33.

It was Pecatonica’s first win over Barneveld since Dec. 21, 2007 — a span of more than 14 years and 30 games.

In other area action on Feb. 3, Darlington won for the fourth straight game, knocking off Iowa-Grant 59-24.
