Brunell sets WI all-time rushing record in win over Brodhead-Juda

COLUMBUS — Brodhead-Juda’s season came to an end with a 49-0 loss to defending Division 4 state champion Columbus in a WIAA Division 5 Level 1 playoff game on Friday, Oct. 20. During the win, senior running back Colton Brunell set Wisconsin’s all-time rushing record with 6,985 yards and counting. The mark was previously set in 2016 by Racine Lutheran’s Tyler Tenner with 6,932 yards.

For Brodhead-Juda, Gabe Bockhop finished 12-for-19 passing for 189 yards and two INTs. His main target was Gunner Boegli, who tallied 152 yards on nine catches. Columbus limited Brodhead-Juda to just 31 yards on the ground, led by Blake Matthys with 14 of those yards. Defensively, Marcus McIntyre led with 15 tackles, followed by Matthys with 11.

Brodhead-Juda finished its season 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the SWC. The Cardinals have made four straight playoff appearances.


AQUINAS 42, NGM 6

LA CROSSE — Back-to-back Division 5 state champion Aquinas continues its quest for another title with its Level 1 win over New-Glarus Monticello on Friday, Oct. 20. The Blugolds built up a 25-0 lead before the Knights scored their only touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Max Marty to Jaiden Sidwell.

Marty finished 13-for-28 passing for 219 yards with one TD and one INT. Cade Thayer was the main target, as he finished with 28 yards on four catches. On the ground, NGM tallied just 52 yards, led by Marty with 26 of them.

The loss marks the end of NGM’s season and the 40-year co-op. Next year, New Glarus will have its own team in the SWC while Monticello will play 8-man football in the Ridge & Valley Conference.
