BRODHEAD — Brian Kammerer, Brodhead Athletic Director, recently announced Gus Wedig as the new head coach for Brodhead-Juda football. Jim Matthys, who had coached the team for a total of 27 years, announced his retirement this fall.
“We are excited to have Cristian ‘Gus’ Wedig take the helm of the Brodhead-Juda football program,” Kammerer said. “Gus comes from a successful football family and has experienced success at the different levels both as a player and a coach. I look forward to Coach Wedig carrying on the strong football tradition that has been built previously.”
Gus’s father, Rodney Wedig, was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association in 2021 after being a head coach at Almond-Bancroft, Big Foot, Beloit Memorial and Milton.
Gus graduated from Big Foot High School in 2014. As a Chief, he totaled 420 tackles with three sacks, three interceptions, a pick-6 and three forced fumbles. Offensively, he recorded 722 receiving yards with 15 touchdowns. He was also named the 2013 Rock Valley South Defensive Player of the Year.
“Graduating from Big Foot High School, I completely understand how amazing the (Brodhead-Juda) program is,” Gus said. “The winning tradition and grit Brodhead-Juda has had for so many years prior — I’m really excited to try and continue the tradition. Using the background I have with my playing and coaching career, I’ve been able to be in touch with some really amazing coaches at the collegiate level.”
After high school, Gus played football at the University of Minnesota Duluth. There, he racked up 166 total tackles with seven sacks and one interception. Offensively, he tallied one TD. He played a large role on the special teams as the primary long and short snapper.
Gus’s coaching career includes time at UW-Whitewater as a graduate assistant coach. He then became the defensive coordinator at Milton, where his father, Rodney, was head coach. Last season, Gus served as Brodhead-Juda’s defensive coordinator.
