Knights, Redbirds suffer 'Ls'

NEW GLARUS - New Glarus senior Tanya Gruter scored a game-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough to top Columbus as the Cardinals beat the Glarner Knights 62-49 Tuesday night.

Columbus (16-2), ranked fourth in the Associated Press Division 2 state poll, jumped out to a 25-9 first-quarter lead.

New Glarus (7-12, 5-4 Capitol South) had a 19-8 edge in free throw attempts. The Knights made 12 of 19 free throws. The Knights outscored the Cardinals 27-25 in the second half.

New Glarus senior Michelle Preston scored 12 points, which all came on four 3-pointers.

Columbus had three players in double figures led by Sam Seltzner with 14 points. Heidi Paul and Megan Crombie each added 10 points for the Cardinals.

Cuba City 74, Darlington 25

CUBA CITY - Darlington ran into Division 3's top-ranked team, Cuba City, Monday and the Cubans rolled to a big win.

Cuba City (21-0, 13-0 SWAL) outscored Darlington 20-5 in the first quarter. The lead ballooned to 26 points by halftime.

Darlington senior Ashley Martin led the Redbirds with a team-high 10 points.

The Cubans had four players in double figures led by Emily Kaiser with a game-high 18 points and Grace Stotmeister with 17 points. With the loss, Darlington drops to 5-13, 3-9 SWAL.
