JANESVILLE - The Monroe volleyball team dropped a non-conference three-set match against Janesville Craig, a Big Eight Conference team Monday, Oct. 14.

The Cougars (26-11) celebrated their senior night sweeping Monroe 25-23, 25-20, 25-13.

"I definitely thought they were beatable," Monroe coach Danya Ward said. "We had some problems passing and we weren't able to put the ball down tonight. We hit a lot out of bounds."

Monroe senior Taylor Barrett had seven kills and six blocks. Senior Kirsten Vetterli added six kills and two blocks. Monroe sophomore Paige Murphy had 11 assists, while senior Katie Holmes had nine digs and senior Savannah Koester had three aces.

"It was a nice win; we started out kind of slow, but picked things up in game two and game three," Craig coach Blake Budrow said. "Amanda Trapp did a nice job of passing all night long, which allowed us to get the ball to different hitters."

Trapp, a senior libero, helped senior setter Kayley Hackett dish out 20 assists.

Senior Ali Calkins led all players with 14 kills, while junior McKenzie Bertagnoli added 10.

"(Calkins) did a nice job of hitting corners and tipping," Budrow said. "They had a really good blocker, who blocked us quite a bit in the first game, but we adjusted well."

The Cheesemakers (8-18) were coming off two losses to Oregon and Milton in the Badger Conference tournament. The Cheesemakers close out the regular season at Evansville today, Oct. 15.

Monroe received a No. 9 seed in the regional and will play at No. 8 seed Clinton Tuesday, Oct. 22.
