MILTON - Monroe senior Jake Hirsbrunner had the hot hand, shooting the Cheesemakers to a 49-41 win over Milton Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Hirsbrunner scored a game-high 19 points and made four 3-pointers. He was 7 of 8 at the free throw line. With the win, Monroe (8-9, 3-6 Badger South) avenged a loss to the Red Hawks earlier this season. The Cheesemakers limited Milton's Drew Johnson to just 10 points and Noah Johnson to five points.
"A big part of the game is we had to contain Drew Johnson," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "The guys were tuned in to what we had to do on defense. Our seniors would not allow us to lose this game. We always want to be the scrappier team fighting and clawing. In our league, it's never easy and doesn't always look pretty."
Monroe senior Charlie Kind scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half to help the Cheesemakers build a 21-13 lead at the half. Monroe junior Kevin Noriega chipped in eight points.
The Cheesemakers were 15 of 25 at the free throw line compared to the Red Hawks who were 10 of 14.
"One of our big goals is to make more free throws than the other team attempts," Murphy said. "That's the sign of a good team."
Monroe will host Madison Edgewood at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 and will play at Waunakee at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. The Cheesemakers have been working to get back to .500 after losing their first two games.
"It would be nice to get back to .500," Murphy said. "It's been an uphill climb."
