Hackett captures regional title at 189

RIVERDALE - The Darlington wrestling team qualified three wrestlers for the sectional at the WIAA Division 3 Riverdale regional Saturday.

The sectional-bound wrestlers include senior Colton Hackett who was a regional champion at 189 pounds, junior Bo Brunkow (119) and senior Brandon Heins (215). Brunkow and Heins each finished second in their respective weight classes. Brunkow has qualified for the sectional two straight years.

Iowa Grant outdistanced Lancaster 212-192.5 to win the regional and qualified for the team sectional on Tuesday. The Redbirds finished third with 156 points.

Hackett (33-7) pinned River Ridge-Cassville's Shea Esser in 2 minutes, 38 seconds in the semifinals. He edged Fennimore's Everett Schwer 3-2 in a thrilling overtime championship match.

Brunkow (21-11) pinned River Ridge-Cassville's Kevin Seng in 1:42 in the semifinals. He then was pinned by Iowa Grant's Tucker Sarbacker in 1:25 in the title match.

Heins (29-11) had a tough road to qualify for the sectional. He had to earn his way by wrestling back. He lost to Riverdale's Tyler Reynolds 9-8 in the semifinals. He then defeated Fennimore's Drew Zoromski 13-2. In the wrestle back for second place, he pinned River Ridge-Cassville's Kyle Johnstone in 5:21.

The Redbirds had five wrestlers finish third including Joey Meylor (125), Brady McDaniel (135), Matt McDaniel (145), Nick Chiaverotti (160) and Tyler Black (171).
