MONTICELLO - The Pecatonica girls basketball team was in a battle through the first half of the Six Rivers East Conference game against Monticello Thursday night.
That's until the Vikings' defense dug in and sparked a 17-9 third quarter run en route to a 55-41 win. The Ponies trailed just 22-21 at halftime.
Monticello coach Paul Wedig said the Vikings came out in the second half with a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap.
"Our girls were just not ready for it," Wedig said. "That led to easy baskets for Pec. We got down by nine or 10 and then it's an uphill battle after that."
Pecatonica (5-1, 2-1 Six Rivers East) was led by seniors Elise Sigg and Brittany Kent who each scored a team-high 16 points. Pecatonica junior Kimee Chandler added 14.
"We were missing an important piece tonight in Alisha Esselstein," Pecatonica coach Mike Armitage said.
The Ponies (2-3, 1-2) had three players in double figures led by junior Sadi Hillard, who scored a game-high 17 points, freshman Desiree Marty (14 points) and senior Sarah Silver (10).
