MADISON - Monroe's boys cross country team finished in fifth place overall with 137 points at the Madison West Invitational on Thursday.

Madison West won the meet with 40 points. Janesville Craig finished second (65 points), Verona third (116) and Madison Memorial fourth (124).

"It was really a two-team race," head coach Dave Hirsbrunner said of Madison West and Janesville Craig.

Brett DeNure was the first Cheesemaker across the line, finishing in third place with a time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds, just seven seconds off his career best.

Dylan Starck came across next in 17th place with a time of 17:18, just 11 seconds off his best time. Joe Pecora finished 23rd in 17:25, Cullen Sampson 28th (17:33) and Brandon Mortimer 66th (19:09).

"We are pleased with the way we ran, though we weren't spectacular. I'll take full responsibility if the guys thought they had heavy legs," Hirsbrunner said. The coach had his players run extra during the week to help them build up muscle and endurance.
