ALBANY - It was sloppy at times, but the Albany boys basketball team survived a defensive battle knocking off Potosi 46-34 Monday.
"Any time you can steal one from Potosi it's a nice win," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "They have had a winning tradition that has carried over from football."
Albany (3-0) committed 23 turnovers, but used a 12-4 fourth quarter run to extend the lead to 14 points. Albany sophomore Tyler Dahl scored a team-high 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals and senior teammate Isaiah Shell had 10 points and eight rebounds.
"I thought they (Potosi) played with a lot more heart than we did," Doescher said. "I was happy to get the win, but we turned the ball over too much. We were too selfish on offense and we didn't play good team defense. I'm disappointed. We have a lot to work on before we hit the conference season."
Dahl had a steal and layup with 4 minutes, 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Comets a 35-26 lead. Albany senior Mitchell Kauk, who had seven points and eight rebounds, scored on a putback and junior Mitchell Trow hit a running layup with 3:20 to go to give the Comets a 39-28 lead.
"That was huge," Dahl said of Trow's layup. "It got us starting to get the ball rolling. It started to kick us into gear so we could finish the game."
Dahl was excited the Comets were able to find a way to win a defensive battle.
"We didn't play up to our potential," Dahl said. "It wasn't our best game. We will learn to limit our turnovers and make smarter passes. We have to work on the easy fundamental stuff."
The Chieftains held Shell scoreless in the first half. However, he warmed up in the second half, shooting 3-for-7 and scoring all 10 of his points. Trow scored eight points off the bench for the Comets.
"He (Trow) really sparked us off the bench," Doescher said. "He hit a couple of threes and a couple of J's (jumpers). It got us going a little on offense."
Albany remains unbeaten and the Comets have knocked off two Rock Valley Conference teams so far this season.
"We can be excited that we are 3-0 in non-conference," Doescher said. "For us to take the next step, we have to beat either Barneveld or Black Hawk. We haven't done that for years."
