COTTAGE GROVE - After being hit by a line drive on his hand last week, Monroe junior Jared Cline got the clearance from a doctor to pitch.
Cline turned in a solid start on the mound, but Monona Grove escaped the Cheesemakers 4-2 Monday. With the loss, Monroe drops to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the Badger South Conference.
"The swelling on his hand was down," Monroe coach Eric Losenegger said of Cline. "He threw strikes and kept us in the game. He was able to pitch to contact and we made some plays behind him."
The Silver Eagles scored three runs in the first inning, but two runs came on a pair of errors by Monroe. Monona Grove's Kolten Koch went 3-for-4 and Marshall Lehmann was 2-for-3.
Cline pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on nine hits and walked three.
Lefty pitcher Michael Zande went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits for the Silver Eagles. He struck out two and walked two.
"He (Zande) was around the plate all game," Losenegger said. "With two strikes or anything close we had to put an emergency hack on it and put the ball in play. We did that they just made plays."
Monroe junior Trevor Meier went 1-for-2 with a triple and senior John Fuller finished 1-for-2 with a double.
