MONROE - Cheesemaker boys soccer coach Tony Vasquez was looking for Monroe to build some momentum before the WIAA Division 2 regionals start next week.

Monroe did just that with a dominating 3-0 win over Poynette-Portage in a Badger Challenge game Tuesday at Honey Creek Park. The win may come with a cost, though, as junior Taylor Teasdale went down in pain in the 69th minute with an apparent leg injury.

"He's in a lot of pain," Vasquez said. "He may have a broken leg. He doesn't think it's a broken leg. Hopefully, we can get him back for the playoffs next week."

Teasdale returned recently from a concussion that forced him to miss three games.

"I don't like to see any kids miss part of the season," Vasquez said. "He's a big part of our offense and defense."

It didn't take Monroe (9-7-2, 1-4-1 Badger South) to get on the board. Sophomore Kevin Noriega scored a goal after a corner kick to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead at 1 minute, 23 seconds. Senior Alex Einbeck added a goal at 21:49 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead at the half. Monroe had four corner kicks in the first half.

Einbeck said the key was getting the ball to the corners, crossing it and finishing at the net.

"We still have to improve on our passes and finish," he said.

Sophomore Dan Tinoco scored a header goal on a pass from senior Oliver Lees at 65:06 to give the Cheesemakers a commanding 3-0 lead.

"I'm glad I got good contact on it," Tinoco said. "I think we were really being aggressive."

Monroe senior goalkeeper Lucas Koch had four saves. Vasquez was happy with the win, but he understands the Cheesemakers can still improve. Monroe plays at Evansville on Thursday and will play in the regional on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Cheesemakers don't know who they will play in the regional, but Vasquez said he expects to find out today on the seeding.

"They stayed confident and under control," he said. "Nobody panicked. They were pretty much relaxed which is how we want them to play. We still have trouble finishing. That is something we have to expect with young guys and the experience we have."

With the win Tuesday, Einbeck believes Monroe is ready for the regional.

"We can go in strong with confidence and play hard," he said.
