EDGERTON - The Monroe boys track team took second at the Tider Invitational Friday, edging out Platteville, but falling to Elkhorn Area by just over 20 points.
Monroe coach Scott Mosher credited his runners and jumpers for their performance.
"They competed hard after a tough week of workouts," Mosher said in an email.
In the 3,200-meter relay, sophomores Jake Brower and Dylan Fahrney, and seniors Jason Koller and Jonah Tostrud took first place, running an 8:22 in the event.
Senior Drake Ingold also "ran away from the competition," Mosher noted, by taking first place in the 1,600. Ingold tacked 10 points on to the team score with a 4:39.57 run over freshman Riley Siltman of Evansville, who finished at 4:41.47.
Mosher said "probably the most exciting race of the night" was the 1600-meter relay. Koller, Sam Kind, Ingold and Tostrud nearly overtook the Elkhorn Area team in a finishing difference of 0.26 seconds. Junior Kyle Legler "ran a gutsy" 3,200-meter contest, edging out Ethan Gregg of Aquinas for a 10:12.67 finish over Gregg's 10:13.43 run to put him in second place.
For the Cheesemakers on the jumping side, senior Brayden Zettle took second in the triple jump. Mosher said the "solid jump" likely put Zettle in line "for one of the top jumpers in the state."
Monroe junior Jordan Montgomery took second in the 100-meter dash, edged out top finisher Brock Zartman of Edgerton. Montgomery finished with a time of 11.41 seconds.
The Monroe boys track team will travel for an invitational against Pecatonica, Southwestern, Albany, Belmont, Benton, Black Hawk, Cuba City, Cassville, Potosi and Darlington set to begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Darlington High School.
The Monroe girls track team also nabbed a second-place team finish, losing to Jefferson but blowing away Mount Horeb.
Junior Cammi Ganshert took a first-place win in the 100 with a time of 12.84 seconds. In the 100 hurdles, sophomore Cassi Gersbach also grabbed a first-place win over Jefferson senior Emily Becker with a final time of 16.62 seconds. Gersbach finished fourth in the low 300 hurdles at 51.78 seconds but nabbed a second-place finish in the girls triple jump.
Ganshert and Gersbach teamed up for the 800-meter relay to share first place, with help from teammates Faith Koester and Emma Sanders, both juniors. They ran to victory with a time of 1:50.50 to beat Jefferson, last year's sectional champion team.
Junior Emma Sanders took fourth in the 200 with a time of 28.42 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, senior Mya Waterman took second, edged out by Platteville sophomore Rebecca Hoyer. Waterman ran a time of 1:03.87.
Monroe freshman Riley Hartwig nailed a personal-best in the shot put, tossing at 33 feet, 11 inches to take fourth in the event. In a three-way tie at pole vault, sophomore Lily Frehner cleared 8 feet.
The girls team travels to Edgewood High School for a quad Tuesday. Real competition will take place May 15, when the Cheesemakers host a varsity conference meet on their own track against Edgewood, Monona Grove, Stoughton, Fort Atkinson, Milton, Oregon and Watertown.
