REEDSBURG - The Monroe wrestling team opened the season with a second-place finish at the Reedsburg Invitational Saturday.
The Cheesemakers finished 3-1. Monroe defeated River Ridge 56-18 and Badger South rival Oregon 42-24. The Cheese knocked off Racine Horlick 55-16, and their only loss came to Sparta 39-28.
"I can't think of a better way to start the year," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "Coming into the season, I didn't know what to expect because we are so young and only have two seniors. They wrestled great."
The Cheesemakers had three wrestlers go 4-0 including sophomores Aaron Hesgard (119) and Kevin Klopfenstein (125), and senior Dylan Schwitz (152).
Monroe had six wrestlers finish 3-1 including junior Cody Stamm (140), freshman Ryan Hughes (160), junior Troy Hawkinson (171), sophomore Dusty Burkhalter (189), sophomore Trevor Gorr (215) and senior heavyweight Nick Walker.
Monroe hosts Oregon in a Badger South Conference dual Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
"I'm sure they (Oregon) will be ticked off that we already beat them," Jackson said.
