MONROE - The road to a possible state tournament run will begin with a home game for Monroe.
The WIAA released the boys basketball regional pairings and seeds Sunday. Monroe (9-12) received a No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 seed Portage in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. March 3.
"We were hoping to get a No. 6 seed since we beat Waunakee head-to-head," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said.
With seven schools from the Badger North Conference in Monroe's half sectional, the Cheesemakers lost their appeal for the No. 6 seed, 6-3. Waunakee received the No. 6 seed.
The No. 1 seed in the Sun Prairie sectional is Stoughton (18-3), which is ranked No. 5 in Division 2. If Monroe beats Portage, the Cheesemakers would get a matchup in the regional semifinals at Mount Horeb (16-5), which is ranked No. 4 in Division 2.
"We are happy to get a home game," Murphy said. "Our half-sectional is loaded. We have been tested this year. You can't pick one game where you don't have to worry in Round 2."
He said Monroe will finish its season with Senior Night Thursday against Fort Atkinson and then turn its attention to the tournament "and the fun that comes with March."
The other regional quarterfinal matchups scheduled for March 3 are as follows:
Division 3
No. 5 seed Brodhead at No. 4 seed Edgerton
Division 4
No. 6 New Glarus at No. 3 Cuba City
No. 2 Darlington gets a first-round bye

No. 8 Monticello at No. 1 Williams Bay
No. 5 Juda at No. 4 Albany
