BRODHEAD - The Brodhead girls basketball team swept the season series from Clinton and remains unbaten after knocking off the Cougars 54-39 Friday night.
"It's obviously a big win for us," Brodhead coach Bard Pickett said. "To get these guys twice is huge as far as conference goes. We still have six more conference games left and we have to take care of business."
Brodhead (15-0, 10-0 Rock Valley South), ranked third in the Associated Press Division 3 state poll, battled back from a 14-10 deficit in the first quarter. The Cardinals outscored the Cougars 20-6 in the third control to seize control. Brodhead junior Carly Mohns scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals. Meg Duffield added 14 points and Taylor Douglas chipped in seven. Duffield made two 3-pointers and the Cardinals were 15 of 20 at the free throw line.
Duffield and junior Jordan Halvorsen's defense on Clinton's Megan Lantz was instrumental. Lantz came into the game averaging 19.5 points per game. She scored just 11 against the Cardinals.
"Defensively, for Meg and Jordan Halvorsen to hold her to just 11 points was a big key," Pickett saud. "Continuing that pressure on her was key."
Pickett also commended Duffield on her shooting.
"She has been shooting well all year for us," Pickett said. "Meg always has the green light. If she is open she has to knock it down."
Darlington 57, Fennimore 37
FENNIMORE - The Darlington girls basketball team was used a solid performance from the free throw line to knock off Fennimore, 57-37.
Darlington led 14-8 after the first quarter and 32-17 at halftime. The Redbirds increased their lead to 21 points before Fennimore won the final period by a point.
"We were 16 of 18 from the free throw line, 88 percent, which is pretty outstanding for the way we've shot the rest of the year," said Darlington coach Riley Fitzsimons. "We ran our offense well and didn't force shots."
Cassidy Chambers led the Redbirds with 20 points. She was joined in double figures by fellow senior Claire Scott, who scored 17.
"We started out knowing we were gonna try to pound it in to Claire," said Fitzsimons. "She scored 10 points in the first half. They double-teamed her, which opened up the outside for Cassidy. It was an inside-out game. They doubled Claire and she kicked it out to Cassidy and she found some lanes to drive and shoot."
Darlington (12-3, 7-2 in the SWAL) is back in action on Tuesday when they will host Lancaster.
