MONROE - The eighth-grade Blaze Red (1-0) defeated New Glarus/Monticello 6-0 Sept. 6 in the first game of the season in the Dane County Youth Football League.
Aaron Hesgard Led the Blaze, rushing for 48 yards. James Frankowski added 18 yards on the ground. Trevor Gorr registered seven unassisted tackles and Trent Wyssbrod had tackles.
Next Monday, Sept. 15, the Blaze eighth-grade red will travel to Wisconsin Heights for a night game beginning at 6 p.m.
Fourth-grade Blaze win 33-0>
The Monroe Blaze fourth-grade team opened their season with a 33-0 win over New Glarus at MHS Field. Tailback Carter Sawdey rushed for 126 yards on eight carries, including two touchdowns and a converted two-point conversion.
Fullback Jake Kind added 76 yards on three carries and a touchdown. Wingback Kyle Krebs had 47 yards on three carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Hunter Weckerly ran for 21 yards on three carries with one touchdown.
Alex Tordoff had 68 yards on three carries with one two-point conversion. Cole Murray had 20 yards on four carries and one two-point conversion. The Blaze ran up 360 yards of offense on 29 plays.
Coach Ryan Paulson complimented the team on total execution of both offense and defense, complimenting Alex Beaver, Haden Arneson, Tyler Elmer, and Jake Kind for allowing only four first downs for New Glarus and dealing a shutout.
The fourth-graders look to next week and a trip to Waunakee for a 10:30 a.m. game.
Fifth-graders fall to Middleton>
The Monroe Blaze fifth-grade team opened its season Saturday at the YMCA with a 22-16 loss to Middleton.
Garrett Gogin scored the first touchdown for the Blaze after a fumble recovery by Kaya Teasdale. McKenzey Foley added the two-point conversion to tie the game in the first quarter.
In the second half, a Monroe interception return for a touchdown by Garrett Gogin was called back, negating a chance for the Blaze to tie the game. Jacob Quinn later tied the game with a 3-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion by Jaron Kuester.
The Blaze were unable to stop Middleton's last drive.
The fifth-grade Blaze will travel to Sun Prairie on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. game.
Sixth-graders lose to Verona>
The sixth-grade Blaze lost to the Wildcat Orange in Verona on Saturday 16-8. The Blaze dominated the game statistics, but gave up two touchdowns (45 and 60 yards) on misdirection plays.
For the Blaze, Heath Butler scored on a 60-yard run and Matt Siegel ran in the two-point conversion to tie the score at halftime, 8-8. A go-ahead touchdown by the Blaze early in the second half was called back due to a holding penalty.
The Blaze ran 45 times for 210 net yards, but did not complete a pass, and lost two fumbles. The Wildcats ran 18 times for 139 net yards, completed 1 of 5 passes for 22 yards, and did not lose a fumble.
The Blaze sixth-graders will travel to against Penn Park in Madison next Saturday for a game against Madison Southside.
Seventh-graders fall to Middleton>
The Monroe Blaze seventh-grade team started its 2008 season with a 16-8 home loss to Middleton.
The Blaze scored early in the first quarter to take an early 8-0 lead.
The second quarter was all defense on both sides of the ball. The second half the Blaze put together some good drives but mistakes helped turn the ball over. The Cardinals scored in the third quarter that tied the game at 8 each.
In the fourth quarter the Cardinals scored their second touchdown to go ahead 16-8 with 1:30 left in the game. The Blaze put together an impressive final drive but came up short with the Cardinals intercepting the ball in the end zone.
The Blaze look to bounce back when they travel to Madison Saturday to take on the Westside Spartans.

Last Saturday, the eighth-grade Monroe Blaze White traveled to Warner Park in Madison to Play Warner Purple. The Blaze came away with a big 22-14 win.
Scores for the YMCA Blaze came from Corey Flannery, who scored on a 71-yard kickoff return, and Kory Costa, who returned a kickoff 80 yards. Alex Barenklau added the Blaze final score with a 23-yard bootleg touchdown.
The defense was led by Bryan Schroeder, Steve Christiansen and Jason Hiatt, who each registered a sack. Christiansen also added two extra points.
The Blaze are at the Madison Spartans on Saturday.
