MONROE - Hard throwing Monroe righty Mike Rear was effectively wild in a 6-4 Senior Legion win over Albany on Monday night.

Rear struck out eight batters while tossing a three-hitter with three walks and two hit batsman, all while throwing a slew of wild pitches.

"I was throwing well," Rear said. "Early on I was commanding my pitches well, hitting my spots on my curve. At the end, I was just getting tired a little bit."

Monroe's offensive didn't kick in until the bottom of the fourth. Kris Reider doubled in Matt Whipple with a shot to deep center. Reider scored one batter later when Scott Kline reached on an error.

"It was really clicking for me tonight. I felt a little calmer at the plate," Reider said. He finished the game a perfect 3-for-3.

"It's more relaxed in the summer, though. I feel much calmer at the plate."

Albany tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Carson Scheidegger singled and scored on a double by Boomer Detra. Detra scored later on in the inning.

Monroe's offense exploded against Albany pitcher Tyler Bauman in the home half of the fifth. Bauman plunked Alex Dammen to lead off the inning and Taylor Weckerly roped a single to left.

Two batters later, with one out, Drew Geissbuhler laid down a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Steve West's throw was too quick for Albany second baseman Tyler Briggs to handle, and Geissbuhler finished the play standing safely at third with Monroe up 4-2.

Matt Whipple then singled to right to bring in the run. Whipple moved around the bases during Justin Rackow's at bat and scored when Rackow reached on an error.

Albany scored two more runs off of a bean ball, wild pitches and an error in the outfield.

"It feels pretty good to win. Rear pitched well, but he just got a little tired at the end," Rackow said.

The two teams meet up again on Monday, June 22, in Albany.
