Argyle tips Monticello; Comets win

MONTICELLO - The Argyle Orioles got a pivotal game four win, then captured game five for a come from behind 25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-5 victory over the Monticello Ponies in Six Rivers East Conference volleyball Tuesday.

Argyle junior Micala Peterson delivered 13 kills and sophomore Kayla Ostby racked up 34 assists and three aces to lead the Orioles. Monticello got four kills from senior Taylor Klitzke, 13 assists from junior C.J. Dilley, and nine digs plus five blocks from senior Taylor Pfeuti.

The Orioles overcame six service errors to win the first game. Argyle jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first game with back-to-back aces by junior Abby Flanagan. The Orioles had five aces in the first game, and were able to overcome a late rally led by Klitzke. The Ponies battled back to win a seesaw second game.

On Thursday Monticello travels to Pecatonica and Argyle will host Black Hawk.

Waterloo 3, New Glarus 0

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights fell to 1-9 following a 25-11, 25-10, 25-15 loss to the Waterloo Pirates Tuesday in a Capitol South Conference match.

Senior Alexa Secord recorded four kills and junior Maci Watrud tallied three aces for New Glarus. The Glarner Knights also got four digs from senior Mara Gartzke and five assists from senior Laura Narveson.

New Glarus travels to Cambridge Thursday.

Riverdale 3, Darlington 1

DARLINGTON - After being swept in three games by Riverdale 12 days earlier, the Redbirds put up a challenge against the Chieftains but fell in four games, 22-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-16 in SWAL conference volleyball Tuesday.

Junior Miranda Wiegel gave the Redbirds a lift with 10 kills and junior Vanessa Riley kept Darlington on the attack with 26 assists. Junior Chayse Hermanson led the Redbirds in digs with 15 and junior Elizabeth Mathias added nine blocks.

"We were close, and we had a statistical edge. But, we had communication and service errors and that did us in," said Darlington head coach Pam Ritchie.

Darlington (0-5) will travel to Mineral Point Thursday.

Albany 3, Pecatonica 0

ALBANY - The Comets used a thrilling game two win to sweep the Vikings, 25-12, 27-25, 25-15 Tuesday in a Six Rivers East conference volleyball match.

Seniors Sydney Bump and Kaitlyn Schulz combined for 25 kills to lead the Comets. Schulz also topped the Comets in blocks with four. Albany also got a big night out of senior Courtney Pfeuti who tallied 26 assists, 14 digs, and two aces.

To get the sweep, Albany needed to take game two from the Vikings, which went right down to the wire.

"It was a back and forth game. They kept coming at us," said Albany head coach Connie Wunschel.

The Vikings were led by senior Nicole Dearth with eight kills and senior Ellie Gifford, who had seven assists and three aces.

Albany (4-0) will travel to Juda, and Pecatonica (0-4) will host Monticello in Six Rivers East conference action Thursday.

Black Hawk 3, Barneveld 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Senior Rachel Rygh notched 10 kills and five aces to lead the Black Hawk Warriors past the Barneveld Eagles, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15 Tuesday.

Freshman Jen Wellnitz added 10 kills and senior Alyssa Pieffer handed out 15 assists to help the Warriors improve to 4-1 in the Six Rivers East.

Black Hawk travels to Argyle Thursday.

Brodhead 3, Beloit Turner 0

BELOIT - The Cardinals outlasted the Trojans, 25-16, 25-22, 25-25 behind eight kills from senior Mariah Mohns and 18 assists by senior Meghan Krupke in a Rock Valley South conference match Tuesday.

Sophomores Taylor Douglas and Amanda Pickel each had three aces to pave the way for the Cardinals.

Brodhead (3-7-1) will host Orfordville Parkview Thursday.
