MONTICELLO - The Argyle volleyball team proved it has what it takes to be a contender for a Six Rivers East Conference championship after winning the Monticello tournament Saturday.

Argyle (10-7, 4-1 Six Rivers East) went unbeaten in pool play with each team playing six games. The Orioles defeated Darlington 25-21, 25-18, 25-19. Argyle then rolled past Albany 25-11, 25-21, 25-13. In the semifinals, the Orioles beat Juda 26-24, 25-22. In the championship match, Argyle beat conference rival Monticello 25-21, 25-16.

"I was very proud of the girls. They had motivation to come back and win," Argyle coach Jen Butler said.

With the win, the Orioles avenged a five-set loss to the Ponies earlier in the week. Argyle senior Jenna Langmeier had a team-high 41 kills, 58 digs and eight aces for the tournament. Sophomore teammate Kayla Butler-Paulson notched 73 assists and eight aces. Jessica Geissbuhler added five blocks for the Orioles.

"We had good ball control," Butler said. "They just played aggressive and didn't let down. I think they know they can do it. We just have to keep doing it. Hopefully, next time we play them in conference we will win."

Monticello (9-2, 5-0 Six Rivers East) played without three starters including senior setter Jordan Garrison, senior middle hitter Brecklyn Klosterman and senior Mackenzie Zanow due to illness.

"I think they (Argyle) ended up passing and serving better than we did," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "They deserved to win."

Monticello went 4-1 in the tournament. The Ponies knocked off Juda in pool play 25-16, 25-15 and then beat Black Hawk 25-13, 26-24. Monticello then outlasted Pecatonica defeating the Vikings 25-15, 25-20. In the semifinals, the Ponies defeated Darlington 25-20, 25-17.

"We played three sophomore starters the whole tournament," Smice said. "I think they handled it pretty well and we played well. I think they got a little tired in the end."

Pecatonica won the consolation title by beating Black Hawk in three sets.

Monticello senior Alyssah Kubly had a team-high 41 kills and nine blocks for the tournament. Senior Paige Dilley had 26 kills and 10 aces. Sophomore Jessie Garrison racked up 66 assists and Chandler Hansen notched a team-high 63 digs.

Monticello is gearing up for a key conference match against Barneveld on Tuesday. The Ponies have a one-win lead over Barneveld and Argyle in the Six Rivers East.

"It will be a big match on Tuesday," Smice said. "It doesn't get any easier in our conference. You can't take anyone lightly."
