SOUTH WAYNE - Both the Albany High School girls and boys track and field teams ran to second-place finishes at the Black Hawk Invitational on Monday.
River Ridge won both team titles. The River Ridge girls outdistanced Albany 179-117. The Pecatonica-Argyle girls finished third (71). Monticello took fifth (61), and Black Hawk was last (41) in the seven-team invitational.
Albany freshman Kirsten Oliver won the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 47 seconds) and the 1,600-meter run (6:00). Freshman Megan Anderson took second in the 1,600 (6:02).
Pecatonica-Argyle junior Josie Penniston finished first in the 200 (28.15). Monticello freshman Alyssen Noriega won the 100 (13.57), and Black Hawk sophomore Brianna Hagen placed second in the 100 (14.05) and finished second in the long jump (13 feet). Black Hawk sophomore Haley Gertsch won the 400 (1:07) and Monticello freshman Abby Wicker took second (1:08). Wicker also took second in the 800 (2:48).
Pecatonica-Argyle's 1,600 relay team of Penniston, Samantha Erickson, Adriana Johnson and Elizabeth Tisch won in 4:37.02. The same quartet for the Vikings won the 3,200 relay (11:47), well ahead of second-place Albany (12:09).
The Comets' 800 relay team finished second (57.46), 0.02 seconds behind winner River Ridge. Monticello took second in the 800 relay (2:05), two seconds away from River Ridge.
Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Taetum Pagel won the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches.
Albany senior Marley Malkow took second in the shot put (28 feet, 1 inch) and second in the discus (79-2). Pecatonica-Argyle junior Dea Vatter finished second in the triple jump (27-7 1/2).
In the boys meet, River Ridge ran away with the team title 203-116 over Albany. The Pecatonica-Argyle boys finished fourth (53), followed by Monticello in fifth (32) and Black Hawk in sixth (23).
Black Hawk senior Caleb Novak won the 1,600 with a time of 5:31 and Albany senior Josh Little won the 800 (2:25). Monticello junior Bryss Shover won the shot put (39-10 1/2). Albany's Andrew Berra won the discus (126-10) and Black Hawk senior Josh Quinn took second in the discus (99-10).
The Comets' 400 relay team of Hunter Georgeson, Connor Trow, Garrett Hlavachek and Berra in 48.71. Albany sophomore Logun Parker and Little teamed with Hunter Overland and Trow to win the 1,600 relay (4:05.18), six seconds ahead of Pecatonica-Argyle (4:11.18). The Comets took second in the 800 relay (1:53).
