LA CROSSE - Monroe junior Meaghan Tomasiewicz's theme song should be "Taking Care of Business."
Tomasiewicz, who doesn't like to be the center of attention, cast a big shadow in tying for seventh place in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches at the WIAA Division 2 state track and field meet Friday at UW-La Crosse's Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
"I wanted to go 5-4," Tomasiewicz said. "I just wanted it really bad."
The tie for seventh with Southern Door's Liz Butler didn't come without some drama. Tomasiewicz didn't clear 5-2 until her final jump.
"I couldn't get too excited," Tomasiewicz said. "I still had a lot of jumps to go. I was relieved."
Monroe girls track coach Curt Miller was excited for his multi-event star.
"She had to make 5-2 to be able to score," Miller said. "That was a big jump."
Tomasiewicz cleared 5-3 at the Boscobel sectional last week, but she didn't get a chance at that height with eight jumpers left. She just missed 5-4 on her third jump, which would have been a personal best.
"I knew 5-4 was in the ballpark for her," Miller said. "We also knew she would have to make it to get on the podium and get a medal."
The work ethic for Tomasiewicz has fueled her success.
"She is one of the hardest workers on the team," Miller said. "Usually, I have to kick her out."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200-meter relay team of sophomores Tess Seichter, Tessa Frutiger, Stephanie Wyss and senior Calyn Bidlingmaier finished 10th, running a PR of 9:53.99.
The Cheesemakers set several goals including winning the heat, a top-eight finish to score points, medaling and setting a PR.
"We wanted to be on the podium," Wyss said.
Bidlingmaier knows the Cheesemakers had big goals.
"We wanted to be top eight for sure," Bidlingmaier said. "We have a lot of goals. Hopefully, we will get one of them."
With three-fourths of the relay team being sophomores, the Cheesemakers are expected to be a force the next two years.
"I'm looking forward to next year," Miller said. "Those three sophomores will only get better."
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team's season came to an end with a 15th-place finish in the preliminaries. The 400 relay team of Breanna Bazley, Wyss, Jess Miller and Tyreisha Gibson finished with a season best time of (:52.35).
