Marie Mason, age 100 of Monroe, WI formerly of rural Argyle, WI passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Aster Assisted Living in Monroe. She was born at home on August 9. 1919 near McConnell, IL. She was the third child of Jacob and Ellen (Fels) Schiess, having four brothers and three sisters.
Marie attended grade school in Illinois and the Gratiot, WI area. After leaving school she worked as a child care worker for various families until her marriage to Eliott Mason at St. Mark’s United Lutheran Church in Dubuque, IA on February 26, 1938.
Elliott and Marie farmed in the Argyle-Woodford area until purchasing the Mason Homestead near Woodford in 1960. They continued to farm until Elliott’s death on July 31, 1984. Marie sold the farm and moved to Monroe in January 1985.
She volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul before starting to work as a home care aide for various families until she retired in her late 70’s.
One of Marie’s favorite pastimes was gardening both on the farm and at her home in Monroe. She preserved or froze most of what she grew. She could never have a large enough garden or too many flowers. Marie also enjoyed traveling after she moved to Monroe. One main highlight was traveling to Switzerland to visit her father’s homeland.
Marie was a member of East Wiota Lutheran Church and its Women of the ELCA. She especially enjoyed the bible study and bible groups.
She is survived by her daughter: Marsha (Don) Siegenthaler of Madison, WI; two grandchildren: Kristina Siegenthaler and Brent (Kari Barrington) Siegenthaler both of Madison; and one brother: Robert (Beverly) Schiess of Freeport, IL. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elliott; and her siblings: Emil Schiess, Nellie Carstensen, Jacob Schiess, Emma Boeck, Mary Lou Rhines, and Kenneth Schiess.
