Karl “Dick” Kundert

Karl “Dick” Kundert, age 92, of Monroe, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. Dick was born in Monroe to Henry and Daisy (Stauffacher) Kundert on November 23, 1931. He was an only child and the light of his parents’ lives. Dick was a 1949 graduate of Monroe High School where he played saxophone in the band and served as class treasurer. He was a member of the school tennis team and in 1948 was part of the duo to win the state championship doubles tournament. After graduating from U.W. Madison with a business degree he enlisted in the Army. He served in the Korean War for 20 months, receiving an early discharge after his father suddenly died in November, 1954. Dick was united in marriage to Betty J. Garrison on July 20, 1957 at the E.U.B. Church in Monroe. Dick gave up his dream of becoming a stockbroker in Chicago to run the family business, Kundert Shoes. He eventually partnered with Harvey Loeffel on the East side of the square. Dick retired in 1993 after the business was sold.

Dick was an active member of the Monroe United Methodist Church. He enjoyed being an unofficial coach for the high school tennis team, helping the young players improve their game until 1979. He also volunteered hundreds of hours at the Monroe Clinic. He enjoyed traveling, organizing family vacations from coast to coast, and working outside where he created a beautiful backyard garden. Dick was also a talented handyman, building several unique storage areas in the house and maintaining a well- run home. He was an avid reader and enjoyed the Wall Street Journal well into his 80’s.

Dick was a devoted husband and loving father. Along with his wife, Betty, he created a wonderful home life for his family and provided a nurturing environment for his children. The Christian faith was not only his religion, but the cornerstone for how he lived his life. The family was richly blessed to have him in their lives.

Dick is survived by his son, Rich (Libby) Kundert of Tuscumbia, AL, and his daughter, Mary Ann Kundert (David Queen) of Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Betty, in 2008.
