Eugene G. Ellingson, age 91 of Monroe passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Medina Nursing Center in Durand, IL. He was born the son of Ivan and Helen (Eichstadt) Ellingson on September 22, 1932 in Monroe. He attended grade school in Browntown and was a graduate of South Wayne High School. Eugene married Nelda Sigafus and together they had four children. He was later united in marriage to Donna (Thompson) Corbin, they shared 32 years together.
Eugene proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was grateful for the opportunity to visit the Korean War Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, DC as part of the Badger Honor Flight. He was a longtime member of Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post #84 and VFW Post #2312 both in Monroe. He was also a member of the Jordan Lutheran Church in Browntown.
Eugene was a truck driver for Almond Freight Line, now known as Overnite Transportation Co. in Rockford for many years, until his retirement. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He spent countless hours with his wife, Donna, helping tie quilts. His beloved companions, his dogs, Ralphie and Willie, held a very special place in his heart. For the past six months he found a new freedom and loved cruising around wherever he could in his electric wheel chair, already reaching 100 miles on the odometer.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Donna of Monroe; children, Jean (Steve) Wenger of Davis, IL and Becky (Barry) Tunstall of Peoria, IL; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellingson; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Barbara Ellingson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, James Ivan in infancy and David Eugene Ellingson; grandson, Adam Johnson; and brother, Duane Ellingson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12PM NOON on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Jordan Lutheran Church in Browntown with Reverend Greg Douthwaite officiating. Burial will follow service in Jordan Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, at the church, from 11AM until the time of service.
