Bernadine “Bernie” M. Schulz, age 93 of Monroe passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025 at her home. She was born at home in Bloomer Wisconsin on June 20, 1931, the daughter of Lawrence and Teresa (Rubesch) Gunderman. Bernie married Howard F Schulz December 30, 1957 at St Victor Catholic Church in Monroe Wisconsin.
She attended a one room school and later graduated in 1949 from Bloomer High School. As a youth, Bernie was active in 4-H, Scouts, high school athletics and was the first president of Future Homemakers of America at Bloomer High School. She also attended UW Stout (formerly known as the Stout Institute) in Menomonie, WI graduating with a BS in Home Economics Education in 1953.
She was employed as a UW Extension Agent in Green County from 1953-55. Then through 1960 she worked as a Home Economist for the Wisconsin Power and Light -Monroe District. Bernie was employed by WEKZ Radio Station for 44 years as hostess of Home Folks with Bernie and later as hostess of Pulse. She was a member of the American Women in Radio and Television. You could find Bernie working part time at Town and Country Styles and Europa or teaching classes at Black Hawk Tech. She held classes at Phillips and Smith to teach folks how to operate the new invention of a microwave oven during that time as well. Bernie was a 4-H leader and involved in Women Club of Monroe actively participating in Christmas Stocking. She was active with the Monroe Athletic Booster Club, a member of Extension Homemakers of Green Country, donated over 20 gallons of blood through the American Red Cross and a Hospice volunteer for 27 years.
She is survived by four children; Tracy (Edward) Dalton of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Ann (Todd) Edwards of Monroe, Wisconsin, Marty (Toni) Schulz of Monroe, Wisconsin, and Dr. Kurt (Dr. Adrianna) Schulz of Shelby Township, Michigan; grandchildren, Garrett (Natalie), Kalli and Mollie Dalton, Hogan and Lilly Edwards, Hunter, Sydney, Alyvia and Bryell Schulz, and Sienna Schulz; great-granddaughters, Eillen and Genevieve Dalton, Zay’Leiah Schulz and Ja’Voni Palmer; sister, Mary (Randy) Nelson of Monroe Wisconsin; brothers, Jerry (Sheri) Gunderman of Peoria, AZ, Paul (Joyce) Gunderman of W. Almond, NY, Edward (Geraldine) Gunderman of New Berlin, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec 9, 2007; her parents; in-laws, Howard O. and Lillian Schulz; and daughter-in-law, Sheila Schulz.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at St. Victor’s Catholic Church of St. Clare of Assisi Parish with Father Chahm Gahng as celebrant. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday April 26th from 9:00AM until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Monsignor Thomas Campion Charitable Fund or St. Jude Hospital.
