MONROE - The Youth Mental Health First Aid, a class developed for adults who work directly with youth including school and youth leaders, is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 at Monroe United Methodist Church, 2227 4th St.

The fee is $50, and includes lunch and refreshments. Checks can be made payable to Journey Mental Health Center.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an internationally acclaimed program that teaches community members how to help an adolescent, ages 12 through 18, who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge. In addition, much of the training also applies to young adults through about age 25.

The eight-hour training teaches a five-step action plan for how to respond to young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations and connect them with appropriate professional, peer or self-help care. It also covers common mental health challenges that youth face, reviews typical adolescent development, and discusses anxiety, depression, substance use, attention and hyperactivity disorders, eating disorders and illnesses that may cause psychosis.

Class size is limited and pre-registration is necessary. The cost for the class is being offset through support from Monroe Clinic.
