NEW GLARUS - A 55-year-old Belleville woman has been accused of stealing $850,000 from the nonprofit organization New Glarus Home Inc. Joyce M. Ziehli was charged Tuesday, Jan. 7 with six counts of theft in a business setting, according to a news release from the New Glarus Police Department.
Ziehli, the former administrative secretary of New Glarus Home, is suspected of using her position to complete hundreds of fraudulent transactions from 2003 to 2013. Ziehli had been a full-time employee of the nonprofit for 31 years.
Ziehli is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Jan. 13 at the Green County Justice Center.
The monies allegedly obtained by Ziehli belonged to New Glarus Home, and there is no indication that any monies or funds belonging to individual residents of New Glarus Home were taken or misappropriated, according to the news release.
The New Glarus Police Department was requested in May of 2013 to investigate a large scale theft of funds from New Glarus Home, a retirement campus that includes a nursing home, independent living apartments and assisted living.
After the initial theft was discovered in January of 2013, New Glarus Home retained the services of a forensic consulting agency to investigate the alleged financial improperties conducted by Ziehli.
According to its website, New Glarus Home has been in business for 47 years. The nonprofit is affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
