MONROE - The crops are in, and the farm will soon be mooovin' onto the Square.

Main Street Monroe is kicking off its 2014 summer season theme of Farmin' on the Square, starting with The Great Tractor Procession at 9:30 a.m. June 7.

This family-friendly event has something for everyone, country and city folk alike.

Farmer Jason, the Emmy award-winning, children's entertainer will be on hand, pickin' and grinnin' and singing about farm life and the wonders of nature.

Farmer Jason, also known as solo artist Jason Ringenberg and lead singer of Jason and the Scorchers, was born in Kewanee, Ill., and raised in nearby Sheffield, where his parents ran a hog farm. He now lives with his own family and a barnyard full of animals in Tennessee.

He won his Emmy in 2009 for "It's a Farmer Jason," a video program running on PBS stations around the country.

Farmer Jason's live concerts involve sing-alongs, dancing and discussions about nature appreciation, ecology and farm animals. He performs solo with just his acoustic guitar and cooks up some kickin' down-home music flavored with folk, country, rock "n' roll and just a dash of DIY punk rock.

Children ages 2 to 8 are bound to enjoy the spontaneous, high energy nature of his concerts, but everyone is invited to let go of their adult inhibitions and get involved.

Farmer Jason will be performing at 10:30 a.m. on the north side of the courthouse. He will then be jamming in the garden at noon, because plants love good music, too.

Farmer Jason should feel right at home on the Square. Populating the Square for the opening celebration will be ponies to ride and other farm animals to pet.

Anyone can poke around in the dirt at the farmin' garden area, and then everybody can take home some healthy farm produce from the Farmer's Market.

No beer or wine is being sold at this event, but there's plenty of good food to eat all around the Square, including sno-cones and the beef producers sandwiches.

Catch Farmin' on the Square this summer, before it all has to mooove off the Square in September.
