MONROE - Everyone has a wish list at Christmas time, and for area businesses on the Square, shoppers tops the list.

Monroe's downtown Square streetscape project is nearly complete, and business owners hope the holidays will help them recover customers who might have been lost or possibly deterred by the construction throughout the summer and fall.

While few of the businesses have determined extended, nighttime hours during the next few weeks to gear up for Christmas, many have extended their hours to include Sunday.

Barb Gelbach, owner of das Baumhaus, said she hopes to see people spend some time on the Square and shop locally during the holidays. She said a lot of businesses offer items that aren't available at larger chains.

"A lot of places even gift wrap," she added.

Angie Zimmerman, owner of Kidz Kloset, said the stores on the Square have things that aren't carried in other shops. People who want to find something unique should look at stores on the Square, she said.
