South Wayne police plan soon will be decided

SOUTH WAYNE - The South Wayne Village Board hasn't made any final decisions about what it will do for police coverage, but it might contract with the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.

The village police chief resigned April 14 to take another job. His last day as police chief was April 30.

Since the end of April, the village has relied on the sheriff's department to provide police protection - something the department has done in the past when the village police chief was away from town on business or vacation.

Village President Karen Peterson said the board plans to meet with Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley to discuss the possibility of a contract between the village and the sheriff's department. The contract could be for a year, she added. However, Peterson didn't go into specifics as to the long-term future plans of the village.

Pedley was out of the office Friday and not available for comment.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department already has contracts with Blanchardville and Belmont. Under those agreements, the department provides an officer for the village for 40 hours a week. Peterson didn't know when another meeting between the village board and Pedley would take place.

For now, calls to the South Wayne Police Department are routed to the sheriff's department. Residents either can dial the South Wayne number, (608) 439-1212 or call the sheriff's department directly at (608) 776-4870. Emergency 9-1-1 calls also go directly to the sheriff's department.
