Soil Sisters event to celebrate Wis. farms, rural life

MONROE - Soil Sisters culinary event will celebrate Wisconsin's family farms and rural life in and around the farming communities of Monroe and Brodhead for three days and five components and involves more than 20 farms.

Governor Scott Walker proclaimed July 27 through Aug. 2 as "Women in Sustainable and Organic Agriculture Week." The event starts Friday with on-farm workshop and culminates with the Tour of Farms on Sunday.

Soils Sisters offers an immersive farming and culinary experience, led by women - the "soil sisters" - committed to a healthy, fresh product or farm-made, artisanal food products and other items.

The Soil Sisters event is a weekend celebration that includes:

n Green Acres: In Her Boots, a day long, hands-on program for aspiring women farmers. Facilitated by the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. The event is ticketed.

n Green Acres: On-farm is hands-on and educational workshops held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The event includes various times and locations and is a ticketed event.

n Dinner on the Farm: Farm-to-table picnic features local cuisine and live music held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $65 per adult and kids under the age of 10 eat free. The event is ticketed.

n Taste of Place at Cow and Quince Restaurant: Local food and drink celebration will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and it is a ticketed event.

n Numerous participating restaurants feature local menu specials during the Dine Fine event held Friday through Sunday. Specials vary by participating restaurants.

n Tour of Farms allows participants to tour various farmstands that are open and sharing eggs, fresh produce, cut flowers and hand-crafted items. Tours are throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The event is free.

Soil Sisters is a venture of the Wisconsin Farmers Union Foundation, the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service and Renewing the Countryside, with major funding from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism's Joint Effort Marketing program.
