NEILLSVILLE — On Sept. 29, interested veterans in Lafayette County can attend a free trip to The Highground Veterans Memorial Park.
“Any veteran from southwest Wisconsin can attend. They just need to call my office so I can put them on the list,” said Samuel J. Fuller, Lafayette County Veteran Service Officer.
Transportation, breakfast and lunch will be provided. The trip will last from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The trip is courtesy of a state grant for veteran outreach.
Contact the Lafayette County Veterans Service Office at 608-776-4886 for more information.
This is the second of four trips in all that will take place. The first was on May 12, and two final trips will take place in the spring and summer of 2024.
The Highground Veterans Memorial Park is a 155-acre park three miles west of Neillsville in central Wisconsin. It is the nation’s largest Veterans Park. It includes more than a dozen tributes, a museum and four miles of hiking trails.
The Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Tribute “Fragments” was the first tribute placed on the grounds in 1988. It is a complex piece at the apex of The Highground’s main plaza. The statue features a female figure wearing a poncho that signifies the burden of the 1,244 Wisconsin service personnel who died in Vietnam.
