Say CHEESE ... Burger

MONROE - The Green County Beef Producers are again challenging all Green County bars and restaurants to enter their third Best Burger contest.

This year, participants are required to include cheese on their burger entry. Using local cheese and ground beef is encouraged.

Participants have until April 18 to enter their establishment in the contest.

"We are not only promoting beef, but giving a plug for the dairy farmers too," explained Dan and Nelli McDermott, retirees who help promote the agricultural product they raise by being involved in the local beef producers organization. They run a small Red Angus operation a few miles south of Monroe.

Last year, 22 establishments participate. Pancho and Lefty's Outlaw Grill and Papa Don's Horseshoe Saloon tied for first, with close to 2,800 burgers served during the contest.

The contest will run from May 1 through July 30. At the end of the contest, votes are tabulated from documented postcards sent in by patrons who have sampled just a few or as many as all the burgers in the competition. The winners will be announced at the Green County Beef Producer's Steak Out on Aug. 18 at the Green County Fairgrounds.

The winner will be featured on the Beef Producers float entry for the Cheese Days parade in September.

To enter the contest, any food establishment can contact any of the committee members for a entry form or by calling 608-293-3428. A $50 fee is required along with a $25 gift certificate that will be used for prizes.
