MONROE — Minhas Brewery, producer of Blumer’s soda, found an isolated problem from a cream soda run that took place back in February and March 2023, the company said Aug. 10.
During a routine Quality Assurance inspection when the run was made, a single pallet was found to have a contamination that was immediately tracked and nearly all of the product returned and destroyed before making its way to major retailers.
Minhas Brewery President Gabe Hopkins and Director of Sales and Hospitality Samuel Laws praised the response by its QA department and tactical team.
“It was an isolated incident. There was just one sku involved and we tracked it back right away,” Laws said. “There is no danger to consumers. There was no recall. There was nothing poisonous. There wasn’t any toxic bacteria.”
Several local consumers learned of the issue via an Aug. 9, 2023, Facebook post by Rainbow Confections, a local business located on the southwest side of Monroe’s Historic Downtown Square.
“Rainbow Confections had one case of the affected product,” Laws said.
Rainbow Confections wrote on Facebook it was notified Aug. 9 from Minhas of the issue, which involved lot number 24005. The business claimed the cans contained yeast that fermented the sodas, adding pressure that eventually popped lids off while sitting on storage shelves.
“We had previously removed these sodas from shelves due to a quality concern on 8/3/2023. After that date, no contaminated sodas were sold, and no further Blumer’s sodas we carry should be contaminated,” Rainbow Confections wrote in the Facebook post.
Rainbow Confections is offering store credit to customers that purchased the product from the bad lot. If the affected lot number is found on the bottom of a can purchased at Rainbow Confections, the business said to take a picture, then throw the can away. The customer can then bring the picture of the affected can to Rainbow Confections and receive store credit.
