Park in Valley View moving forward

MONROE - The City of Monroe Board of Parks & Recreation Commissioners approved the use of $5,050 received from a share of the Reasa funds for the Valley View subdivision park development Wednesday.

The Monroe Morning Optimist Club has also donated $2,000 to the project.

"I'm very pleased. That puts us well over half," Alderman Charles Schuringa, Ward 10, said about the accumulating funds.

The money will go toward the building of a mini-shelter, playground equipment and benches.

Two Boy Scouts' Eagle badge projects will clean up excess brush and develop a layout of the park equipment.

The empty lot, located at the end of 27th Street Boulevard along Second Avenue, was set aside as park land after Werner and Marleen Zimmerman started the subdivision in 1975 and deeded it to the city. The lot, originally three lots, is 160 feet by 190 feet.

Schuringa first brought the idea to commissioners after hearing from numerous local residents. Commissioners voted unanimously April 16 to pursue development of a Valley View subdivision neighborhood park.

Annual interest from the Cliff and Dorothy Reasa Fund is divided among Park & Rec., the senior center, Green County Family YMCA and the Monroe United Methodist Church.
