DARLINGTON - A Darlington man was killed Wednesday when his vehicle failed to negotiate a curve east of Gratiot, according to Lafayette County Chief Deputy John Reichling.

Walter J. Schwartz, 75, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas. The accident took place on Wisconsin 11, about a half-mile east of Gratiot.

Deputies, along with Gratiot First Response, the Gratiot Fire Department and Rural Medical Ambulance, responded to the scene at about 6:30 p.m.

Initial investigation indicates Schwartz's 2005 Buick LeSabre was westbound on Wis. 11 when it failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line and went into the south ditch. It hit the entrance to a field, went airborne and overturned. Schwartz was ejected from the vehicle.

Schwartz was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the crash, Reichling said.

This was the second fatlity on Lafayette County roads in two days.

A 3-year-old Darlington boy was killed when he was hit by a car at about 6:30 Wednesday on County F about 2.5 miles north of Darlington.

Benjamin S. Lapp was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by a car driven by Douglas Kelly, 36, Darlington. Neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
