MONROE - Almost every area school board has more candidates than open seats for the upcoming April election, with some ballots promising to be highly competitive.
Voting for new school board members will be a part of the April 5 election. A few districts have an equal amount of new blood trying to replace board members who have decided to leave their seats. Others have more than they can handle. In Monroe, for example, numbers evened out for the three seats open in 2016, while Albany has five candidates for three seats.
Albany: The district has three open seats. Two incumbents, Edward Maksym and Fred Johnson, are vying to hold their positions while three contenders have sights on the board. Barb Briggs, Phil Kubesh and Steve Elliott are all running for a highly contested position on the Albany School Board.
Argyle: Two incumbents are looking to take their open seats back without opposition. Julie Ostby and Keith Ritschard are running for re-election to the Argyle School Board.
Black Hawk: The numbers evened out solidly in this election race. Gary Signer is looking to retake his place on the Black Hawk School Board while fellow incumbent Steve Monson has decided not to seek re-election. Newcomer Tara Herbst is running for an open seat.
Brodhead: Two seats are open, but only one incumbent is looking to take on another term. Al Schneider will be on the ballot in an effort to continue his tenure on the Brodhead School Board while incumbent Paul Donovan has decided to step down. Jody Kail is running for an open seat.
Darlington: Four seats are up for grabs in the election for the Darlington School Board. Incumbents Matt Crist, Matt Wilson and Teresa Siegenthaler have filed to once again fill their positions on the board. Fellow incumbent Tony Muhlstein has filed non-candidacy papers. Two others are hoping to have a shot at serving on the board: Donna Jean Wiegel and Judy Huntington.
Juda: The district has two seats open with two people looking to fill them. Joanne Salzwedel has hopes to continue on the Juda School Board while fellow incumbent Randy Riese has decided not to run for re-election. Stefanie Baum is running for an open seat.
Monroe: Three seats are open for the Monroe School Board. Two incumbents are running once more for positions on the board. Les Bieneman and Daniel Bartholf are seeking re-election while fellow incumbent Scott Schmidt has decided to step down. Rich Deprez is running for an open seat on the board.
New Glarus: Three people are interested in the two seats up for grabs on the New Glarus School Board. Keith Steffen is making a run for the position he currently holds on the board while fellow incumbent Mary Anne Oemichen has decided to step down. Debra Fairbanks and Linda Sheridan are running for the open seats.
