Two unidentified employees of Lakeshire-Marty Company are shown dipping wheel Swiss cheese in wax. Commonly weighing approximately 180-200 pounds, the wax coating gave the wheels a shiny appearance and also inhibited the growth of mold. Carl Marty and Company/Lakeshire Company was located at the north end of 17th Avenue and was serviced by a spur off the Illinois Central Railroad. Marty Swiss was promoted as "The Champagne of Swiss Cheese." Owners Carl Marty Sr., Robert Marty and Carl Marty Jr. marketed the company as "The Swiss Cheese House of America" since 1894. Questions, comments or any further information or identification of the two individuals may be directed to Mary Ann Hanna at 608-325-4324 or nhcchistory@yahoo.com.
