MONTICELLO - A fundraiser to replace outdated fitness equipment and renovate the Monticello school building has been gaining traction since it was established in May but still has steps to take toward its final goal.
Alma Mentz, president of the Monticello Sports Boosters and a teacher with the district, noticed the need for a new space and approached the school board with an idea to rethink the available fitness options.
"It just wasn't what the kids needed," Mentz said.
The space where new free weights and cardio machines will be placed is currently being worked on; from the walls to the heating and the air conditioning, everything will be up-to-date, Mentz said. The Booster Club has raised just over $9,000, but need a total of $57,000 to fund the changes.
A color run in September should bring in proceeds, she said, but the group hopes to finish the fund-raising portion shortly after the event.
The center will not be solely for the students at Monticello. Mentz said the aim is to bring in community members as well.
"We don't have something like this in Monticello," Mentz said. "The nearest is Monroe. We focus on fitness so much in school, but we should also focus on family outside of the school."
