MONROE - In a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee:

- Discussed the current status of the city's emergency preparedness and a city emergency management plan. According to Fire Chief Daryl Rausch, the police and fire departments have emergency response plans, but the city needs to identify and prepare an emergency operation center to manage an incident beyond the first 12-hour period of a city-wide disaster. Rausch said a three-year plan to update emergency preparedness has been outlined. Executing the plan is expected to cost about $10,000 to $15,000 each year. The cost for the first year will be included in the 2012 budget. Rausch said grants may be available for the second and third year projects, which include electrical wiring for phones and computers, training and exercises.

- Discussed traffic lane widths and parking along the 21st Street corridor between 11th Avenue and 17th Avenue. The committee asked Police Chief Fred Kelley to gather more information.

- Discussed requests for additional stop signs or restricted parking around the 17th Avenue and 16th Street intersection. The committee asked for more information.

- Discussed a suggestion to install pedestrian crossing signs or paint crosswalks across 11th Street at 11th Avenue. The committee postponed any action, with expectations that traffic in the area will decrease with the 8th and 9th Street project completed later this month.
