Four years ago when Scott Anderson came to Juda as the High School Math teacher, there was no math team.
"That first year I had to beg to get eight students to go to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville math meet - it was not even a full team. I drove the van to Platteville for our first math meet," Anderson said. "This year we took 34 students, which is nearly 40 percent of the entire high school, we had three teams compete, the bus almost was not big enough."
Juda not only had three teams compete, it claimed the Division 4 Tri-State Champion Trophy for the second straight year. More than 500 students from 36 high schools in southwestern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois participated. Juda was one of the smallest schools.
"When we started four years ago it was intimidating just to be in the surroundings, but now our Mathletes thrive on the pressure and excitement at the meet," Anderson said. "This is a major accomplishment for Juda's Math Team. If you were to equate it with sports it would be like winning regionals. Winning first place two years in a row shows how hard these students have worked."
The meet consisted of individual and team portions. Katlyn DeVoe of Juda made All-Academic Team Level One. "Katlyn did a great job and we're really proud of her," Anderson said. "Her efforts, along with all the other students, are what helped us win. We won not because of one student's great effort, like Katlyn's, but because all of our students scored well."
Juda's Math Team prowess does not stop at UW-Platteville. It also is the reigning Six River's East Conference Champion for 2009 from this past spring.
"We have already scheduled practice for the 2010 meet on March 16th, the students really want to do well again this coming spring," Anderson said.
