TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT - An Evansville man was arrested on a third-offense charge of drunk driving and hospitalized Saturday after he jumped out of a moving vehicle, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department.

Matthew L. Sturdevant, 26, was reportedly driving eastbound out of Monticello at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when he got into an argument with his passenger, Tiffany M. Swantson, 25, Monroe.

As an apparent result of the argument, Sturdevant stopped the vehicle at the intersection of County C and County D to allow Swantson to take over driving.

While the vehicle was moving again, Sturdevant reportedly climbed into the backseat and then leapt out one of the rear passenger windows.

"Sturdevant impacted the paved roadway and sustained injuries which required his transportation to an area hospital via medical helicopter," Patrol Sgt. Robert Werren Sr. said in a news release.

Swantson was taken to Monroe Clinic for a medical evaluation, according to Werren. The vehicle was undamaged.

As of Monday afternoon, Sturdevant was still in the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. A hospital rep reported his condition as "fair."

Start court records show Sturdevant was convicted in March 2012 of his second offense of operating while intoxicated. He was sentenced to five days in jail, assessed $1,059 in fines and court fees and had his license revoked one year.

Assisting deputies at the scene Saturday night were officers with the Monticello, New Glarus and Belleville police departments, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Monticello Fire Department, Albany EMS, New Glarus EMS and UW Health Med Flight.
