NEW GLARUS TOWNSHIP - A New Glarus man faces a sixth-offense drunk driving charge and remains in critical condition following a crash that also injured a 1-year-old boy and the boy's mother.
Carmen F. Ott, 60, has five prior convictions of driving while intoxicated, according to a news release from the Green County Sheriff's Department. His pending sixth-offense charge has an added penalty for causing injury.
The accident happened at about 4:42 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Ott was southbound when he crossed over the center line while turning into a driveway and drove into the path of a northbound vehicle.
The other driver, 33-year-old Lindsay K. Dahmen, was taken by Belleville EMS to Meriter Hospital for treatment of injuries, as was her toddler son, Drake J. Dahmen. No injuries were reported for the other passenger, her husband Ryan R. Dahmen.
Ott had to be extricated from his severely damaged vehicle and was flown by Medflight to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. A hospital spokesman said Sunday evening, Nov. 3, that Ott was in critical but stable condition.
The Dahmens' vehicle was severely damaged and towed. New Glarus Area EMS and the New Glarus Fire Department also responded to the scene.
Ott also faces citations for operating left of center and not wearing a seatbelt. Other charges are pending.
Ott's prior DWI convictions include his second in April 1997, his third in March 1998 and his fourth in September 2001, all in Green County, and his fifth in July 2004 in Dane County.
For his most recent conviction, the fifth DWI, he was sentenced to one year in jail and three years of probation.
