DARLINGTON TOWNSHIP - A Darlington man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated after he crashed his car Saturday, Oct. 26, seriously injuring himself and a passenger.
Devin A. Hastert, 24, was also cited for marijuana possession, having open intoxicants in the car and failing to maintain control.
He and his passenger Caitlyn M. Sproul, 22, Twin Lakes, were taken by Rural Medical Ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County for treatment of serious injuries, according to a news release from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.
Both were later flown by Medflight helicopter to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
Both remained hospitalized Monday afternoon, Oct. 28, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Hastert was reported in fair condition and Sproul in good condition.
Deputies say Hastert was eastbound on Wis. 81 in Darlington Township at about 5:15 p.m. Saturday when his 2004 Toyota Camry went onto the shoulder. He overcorrected, and the car veered into the opposite ditch, where it overturned, hit a utility pole and came to rest on its roof.
The car was extensively damaged and towed. The Darlington Fire Department, Darlington police and Alliant Energy assisted at the accident scene.
State court records for Hastert show no prior criminal record in Wisconsin, only a speeding ticket from 2009.
