Kwik Trip seeks new zone for future build

MONROE - A public hearing has been scheduled to consider rezoning a plot of land recently purchased by Kwik Trip for a new store.

While the project is still in its preliminary stages, Kwik Trip has moved forward to classify land which has until now been used as space for trailer homes on the corner of 8th Street and 8th Avenue. Kwik Trip is requesting the properties at 730 and 720 8th Ave. and 801 8th St. be rezoned from industrial to commercial.

Along with the measure to designate them as general business district, the Plan Commission included surrounding industrial area 620 8th Ave. and 815 and 819 8th St. as business district areas as well.

The public hearing to finalize the designations is scheduled for Jan. 5.

Current plans for the new Kwik Trip facility include an enlarged convenience store, fueling canopy and a car wash. Initial diagrams have placed the gas pumps running perpendicular to 8th Avenue, with the store set farther back and a car wash attached to the back of the building, though no plans have been finalized.
