Grede facilities win distinctions

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Thirteen U.S.-based Grede facilities won 11 gold, one silver, and one commendation distinctions from Liberty Mutual Insurance for outstanding health and safety at their work sites.

The awards are calculated based on the number of hours worked relative to the number of recordable injuries and illnesses per 100 employees that result in days away from work, restricted work activities, and/or job transfers over a select period of time. Low occurrences of injuries result in lower DART rates. To qualify for Liberty Mutual's gold award, a DART rate of at least 80 percent better than the Bureau of Labor Statistics is needed with a minimum of 200,000 work hours.

Besides receiving a corporate-wide gold award, the following Grede facilities won the gold recognition: Bessemer, Ala. (foundry); Biscoe, N.C. (machining operation); Brewton, Ala. (foundry); Browntown (foundry); Columbiana, Ala. (foundry); Iron Mountain, Mich. (foundry); Wauwatosa (Liberty foundry); Menomonee Falls (machining operation); New Castle, Ind. (foundry); Reedsburg (foundry); St. Cloud, Minn. (foundry).

Grede's plant in Berlin won a silver award from Liberty Mutual, reflecting 60 percent below the national average DART rate. Grede's machining operation in Oconomowoc was given a commendation because the plant's "hoursworked" did not meet minimum threshold requirements to be eligible for the gold award.
