MONROE - The Green County Humane Society finally has a 2013 service agreement with the City of Monroe.
On a 7-2 vote, the Common Council approved the agreement April 3, as recommended by the Public Safety Committee, with minor changes made as recently as April 1. Aldermen Brooke Bauman and Sara Conway voted against the motion.
Bauman questioned why the new changes had not been incorporated into the agreement presented to the council for a vote.
City Attorney Rex Ewald said the changes were minor and did not change the substance of the agreement. The changes came at the request of the humane society board and included defining the animals that would be accepted at the shelter, holiday dates the shelter would be closed and an additional $10 fee per day for animals under court-ordered seizures.
The city will pay the society $35,000 in monthly installments for its services to board stray cats and dogs picked up within the city. Feral cats and vicious dogs are not accepted.
The humane society had presented a service agreement that mirrors the agreement it has with Green County, but the Public Safety Committee voted unanimously March 18 to recommend its own drafted agreement to the Common Council. The society had about two weeks to request its changes.
The society in February rejected the city's proposal to pay $130 per animal presented for holding.
